Scott Olsen - NDEs, Transformation and the Gospel of Thomas
The Near-Death Experience often results in a powerful, alchemical-like transformation of consciousness. As in other perennial “rites of passage” (including initiation and vision quests) this transmutation of “Self” results when one’s ego-driven self-identity is transformed and fused into a wiser, more empathic, purpose-driven sense of “Self”. This metamorphosis or transformation into greater wholeness is often represented in the alchemical and Gnostic literature, including the Gospel of Thomas, as a fusion of opposites into a Divine Unity. This Transmutation of “Self” (whether through an NDE or other “rite of passage”) is often closely associated with the expansion of Wisdom, an enhanced capacity to Love, and a definite sense of Purpose along with the importance of its fulfillment.
