Liz Dale and Chris Carson with Kate Steadman - Panel: NDEs as Rites of Passage in Two Disparate Populations: Parallels and Differences
LGBT Transformational Rites of Passage in the NDE: LGBT near-death experiences (NDE’s) are excellent examples of transformational rites of passage. With separation from the body and everyday life, the NDEr finds him/herself in an altered reality with a disconnect from what is customary. This connection is frequently in concert with connections to the Divine. This process results in personal transformation and change. In this presentation, the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender NDE stories from Liz Dale’s book Crossing Over and Coming Home and other unpublished writings will be used to address the concept of rites of passage. The NDE offers me experiencer transformations that would otherwise not be experienced in everyday reality. During and long after the NDE, the experiencer (and others they come in contact with) notices a new and unique way to relate to the world. This change is fully transformational and lasting.
