Timothy J Green, PhD - "The Near-Death Experience as One of a Variety of Ecstatic Experiences: The Implications for the Field of Near-Death Studies"
The NDE will be presented as one of a variety of experiences best described as ecstatic (from the Greek work ekstasis meaning “to step outside oneself). Other ecstatic episodes include OBEs that occur at times other than apparent physical death, lucid dreams, and shamanic journeys. Because these other ecstatic experiences have no foreseeable dangers or negative consequences associated with them, and because recently developed or reintroduced techniques exist to teach people how to enter into the ecstatic state of consciousness, the possibility of using these methods to induce or facilitate the ecstatic state of consciousness in large numbers of people has become a real possibility. The implications of this for the field of near-death studies are discussed.
