Alinaghi Ghasemiannejad - The Elements of Near-Death Experiences in the Quran
In this presentation, I compare research findings on near-death experiences (NDEs) to conceptualizations of the process of dying from Islamic theology and philosophy. There are three Islamic criteria for the reality of mystical experiences, including passages from the Quran, sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, and sayings and books of Infallible Imams. I focus in particular on the accordance of 10 of the most widely reported NDE features with Quran verses about the dying process. My assessment revealed one feature inconsistent with the Quran, three features not mentioned in the Quran, and six features directly or indirectly referenced in the Quran. I discuss the implications of these findings for Islamic NDErs and for rapprochement between near-death researchers and Islamic theologians and believers.
