Selected Bibliography of Near-Death Experiences

This page is also available as a brochure(PDF: 440Kb) suitable for printing and distribution, though generally this page is kept more up-to-date.  (If you have trouble reading the PDF file, the Adobe Acrobat Reader is available for free download.)

Following is a short list of books to help you get started learning about the near-death experience (NDE).  Within each category, the resources appear in alphabetical order by author.  Links to some other bibliographies are at the bottom of the page.

Many of the authors listed here have spoken at IANDS conferences, and audio tapes of their presentations are available, so if you prefer tapes over books, you can purchase these through IANDS.

IANDS is working on an extensive research bibliography project, which you can purchase the first volume of.

General / Introductory

Atwater, P. M. H.  The Big Book of Near Death Experiences: The Ultimate Guide to What Happens When We Die.  Charlottesville, VA:
Hampton Roads, 2007.

A broad, quite comprehensive general overview of the NDE consisting of a mix of fact and opinion.

van Lommel, Pim  Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience.  New York: HarperOne, 2010

Van Lommel provides scientific evidence that the near-death phenomenon is an authentic experience that cannot be attributed to imagination, psychosis, or oxygen deprivation. After such a profound experience, most patients' personalities undergo a permanent change. Van Lommel shows that our consciousness does not always coincide with brain functions and that consciousness can even be experienced separate from the body.

Comprehensive review of the scientific literature from the perspectives of various disciplines including health care fields and the social sciences. Among the topics are pleasurable western adult near-death experiences (NDEs) and their after effects, distressing NDEs, NDEs in children, non-western NDEs, NDE and world religions, veridical perceptions in NDE, explanatory models of NDE, and practical applications of the research.

Fenwick, P., & Fenwick, E. The truth in the light.
New York: Berkley Books. (1995)

Results of a study of over 300 NDEs in the United Kingdom conducted by a neuropsychiatrist and his wife.
