On
January 23, 2008, a local paper in upstate New York, The Daily Star, published a fascinating story about the case of Dr.
Tony Cicoria, a respected surgeon who was hit by lightning in 1994 and had an
NDE that included an out-of-body experience. After recovering from his near-death experience, Dr. Cicoria
returned to his medical practice and everything seemed back to normal.

Recently a
paper was published in the New England
Journal of Medicine about electrical stimulation of the brain that seemed
to induce an out-of-body experience (OBE), a feature found in many NDEs. The
new research is gaining media attention but the conclusions cited in
the press are questionable.

On August 31, 2007, Time magazine posted on their website an
in-depth article on NDEs that was also published in their print edition.
You can read this article by clicking here.
The Time article does a good job of offering a balanced presentation of the varying opinions
of NDE researchers, including those who believe that only a physiological basis
can explain NDEs and those who believe that traditional scientific models do
not offer adequate explanations. That is, the presentation is balanced until
the last paragraph.

The first is an excellent radio interview show, originally broadcast on August 24, 2007 with NDE researcher Dr. Sam Parnia about the research into out-of-body experiences and NDEs. The second is IANDS' perspective and links to coverage of two papers published in the journal Science about how two research teams created an illusion of an out-of-body experience in laboratory settings.

The May 7, 2007 issue of Newsweek
magazine contained an article that presents research findings regarding
what happens to heart cells after a severe heart attack when the heart
stops beating (cardiac arrest). The article states the reaction of
researchers when they looked at these cells under the microscope. “What they saw amazed them, according to Dr. Lance Becker, an authority on emergency medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
‘After one hour,’ he says, ‘we couldn't see evidence the cells had
died. We thought we'd done something wrong.’ In fact, cells cut off
from their blood supply died only hours later.” The traditional expectation was that irreversible damage would normally have begun after four or five minutes.
